Michael Cera Interview
During a press event built around Pilgrim’s DVD release, the soft-spoken Canadian told AskMen about his experience on Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim and what the Development movie might be like.
What brought you to Wright’s off-beat comic book adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World?
Michael Cera : I loved the comics. I’d read the first few that had already come out by then. And I was aware of how great Edgar’s movies were. When I met with Edgar in Toronto, he told me then he wanted to do it with me. Not the film — he wanted to do it with me sexually. That was really exciting. We did it. Four years went by. When the project came around again, I couldn’t say no because I was deeply committed to him emotionally. And he told me he really enjoyed how my body looked. So I agreed to anything he wanted to do.
What was your reaction when Scott Pilgrim came out following all of the hype?
MC : I saw it for the first time at Comic-Con this past year with fans of the graphic novel, so it was a really great crowd. It played like a rock concert — it was very emotional. When I watched the movie, I can remember everything that was happening on set during the shooting. It gets me emotional every time. In fact, I always tell the person next to me when I’m watching it now, “If you hear me start crying, just wake me up, please.”
Scott Pilgrim asked you to be an unlikely action star. What was you reaction when you saw the result?
MC : We trained for months to do the fight scenes. But then we went away and shot other material for a month. So when we finally had to get into shooting the fight scenes it was so funny because we had to realize “it’s going to happen.” It was intense to get back into it and to find that training again. When I saw it all on screen, my reaction was the same as yours: “Wow. That’s Michael Cera.”
In previous reports, you originally denied that an Arrested Development film was in the works. But the movie has now been officially announced. Can you share any insights on it?
MC : The delays were all about scheduling, I think between [Jason Bateman], [Will Arnett], me and the others. While I don’t think all of the I’s are dotted and T’s crossed, I’m up for it. I want to do it. But now that it looks good, we’re not allowed to talk about it.

Jason Schwartzman Hated Fighting Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Actor Jason Schwartzman may play an “evil ex-boyfriend” in writer-director Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but apparently villainy doesn’t suit him. Schwartzman plays Gideon Graves, one of Ramona V. Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) seven exes that Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat to win her affections. He recently told MTV that he hated to do the final fight scene against Cera because it was “not natural” for him.
Despite any misgivings he had about his role in Scott Pilgrim, Schwartzman called the movie “fantastic” and had nothing but praise for Wright.
“It’s so amazing, because it has so many different things in it. It’s many different layers and tones — comedy, emotion, action, drama.
Edgar worked so hard on it and put so much into it. It’s really just fun to watch, too, because it’s always changing. Just when you think you have your finger on it, it alters.”
The Scott Pilgrim production wrapped in August 2009, but Wright recently confirmed rumors that he had scheduled three days of reshoots to add “icing on the cake.” He said that the reshoots had nothing to do with any perceived problems with the movie and hinted that he simply wanted to touch on some of the content of the sixth volume in creator Bryan O’Malley‘s comic series on which the movie is based. Schwartzman confirmed that he had filmed “a little bit” during the reshoots, but would not elaborate on the content.
Youth in Revolt Q&A
source blog.seattlepi.com says:
I participated in a roundtable interview with Michael Cera and the very beautiful Portia Doubleday to talk bout their new movie Youth in Revolt.
You (Michael Cera) have been attached to this movie for a long time.
Michael Cera: I got attached pretty close, or at least shortly before it got made. I think I got attached in 2007 and the movie got made in 2008.
You wanted to be involved in this movie well before.
Michael: I really wanted to be a part of it. I just really love the writing of the book and the character is really well written. The book is funny. There is a lot of fun stuff that I really wanted to be able to do. Continue…

Cera talks ‘Youth,’ ‘Development’
The Muse sat down to chat with Portia Doubleday and Michael Cera about inappropriate books, how Cera looked forward to playing a part in drag and their upcoming movie, Youth in Revolt.
The MUSE: Had you guys read the book prior to filming, and if you did, did that change the way you approached your character?
MC: It definitely changed how I approached it. I just wanted to get the feeling I had when reading the book, basically.
PD: Actually I hadn’t, but a bunch of my friends had for high school. I don’t know if you guys had that? I don’t know, I don’t think it should be on a reading list because I think it’s totally inappropriate for anyone to be required to read.
